Clean Shipping Project

The Clean Shipping Project, which is based in western Sweden and conducted on behalf of public-sector customers, has developed an entirely new environmental index – CSI – which allows major purchasers of transports to perform environmental assessments of entire shipping companies during their procurements.

In total, consideration is taken to 20 factors that have various environmental impacts, including fuel, lubricating oils, bilge water, ballast water, bottom coats, refrigerants and waste.

During autumn 2008, through the Clean Shipping Project, 12 of Sweden’s largest import/export companies requested environmental information from 77 of the world’s largest shipping companies, including Transatlantic. The action was taken after the companies signed a declaration of intent stating that they would begin imposing environmental demands on their marine transports.

Transatlantic’s Clean Shipping Index efforts

Transatlantic is working with the templates used in the Clean Shipping Index to determine how much progress the company has made in its environmental efforts. Many of the shipping line’s major customers have begun using the system, and Transatlantic uses it to attach supporting documentation to its responses to transport purchasers’ inquiries.

The production orders used in the system entail that we can easily obtain indications of which improvements increase our environmental points within the areas of Chemicals; Water, fuel and waste control; CO2; SOx and particles; and NOx. In addition, we can view the percentages achieved on a red, yellow and green bar.
