
A considerable portion of future oil and gas extraction is expected to take place in new fields in the Arctic waters, which will entail a need for ice-going offshore vessels with specially-trained crews. TransAtlantic’s unique expertise in executing operations in ice and harsh weather conditions will be highly significant when the search for oil and gas gathers momentum in these areas.
The fleet comprises eight vessels built to cope with icebreaking and offshore assignments. During the first quarter of the year, they were available for icebreaking for the Swedish Maritime Administration and during the remainder of the year they were available for the offshore market.
TransAtlantic’s business area within Offshore/Icebreaking is operated as Viking Supply Ships with headoffice in Copenhagen, Denmark. in order to further strengthen the product offering, SBS Marine was aquired, a British offshore shipping company based in Aberdeen. The company operates a fleet of five modern and one older PSV vessels (Platform Supply Vessel) with a current turnover of approximately SEK 220 M on an annual basis. Accordingly, TransAtlantic has developed a unique, integrated offshore/ice management service based on a documented operational concept, experience and highly qualified crew, as well as specially designed vessels, which would provide customers with a more efficient, safer and environmentally friendly operation. TransAtlantic Ice Management is a system to ensure that operations can be performed with minimal impact from ice. In addition to ice breaking, the system includes forecast methods for ice movements, meteorology, safety and health systems.
